I have been told that I am pig-headed, insisting that I am right and that everyone else is wrong. My staunch belief that dieting is the best and fastest way to lose weight is unwavering. Yes, I am fat. However, that it not entirely my fault. Bad genes, health issues, slowed metabolism and, of course, not having found the correct diet, are all contributing factors. When I researched fat camps and found Green Mountain at Fox Run, feeling deeply skeptical would be an understatement. So why did I go? In a word: desperation.
At first, I was unwillingly to part with my pre-conceived notions. This non-diet, mindful approach seemed like a bunch of hogwash. I resisted; the staff persevered. It was no easy task, but they won me over. To Anne, Dana, Lynn Ann and many others, my gratitude is palpable. I am in a much better place. Not entirely free from my food and weight struggles but so much more adept at dealing with them. It s all about small steps, mindful choices, different attitudes, enjoyable movement and support from staff and fellow participants. The sense of community, comradery and fun I experienced was priceless. Vermont proved to be a serene, breathtakingly beautiful sanctuary. I continue on my journey towards better health and well-being (in clothing three sizes smaller than what I arrived in) with a photo of my Green Mountain sisters on my fridge.
