I completed all 12 months of 2017 Cox Health insurance contract for my son. Cox Health had a large rate increase for 2018. I shopped for new coverage and did not purchase Cox s or make any payments for 2018 coverage to Cox Health. I purchased cheaper health coverage elsewhere, during the Affordable Care Act open enrollment period. I later received a collection notice for 2018 coverage from Cox Health. Cox Health had a 2018 auto-renewal and turned the charge over to a debt collection service. I contested the auto-renewal at the higher rate and told them that I called. They said that I did not say that I purchased other coverage during the call. If I did not tell them specifically, I told their agent with HealthCare.gov. Having to go through healthcare.gov creates confusion on who you are speaking with and what their relationship with Cox is... Cox would not negotiate a settlement amount for the 2018 renewal. I believe this practice should be illegal. It comes across as, you will pay this or we will destroy your credit. Typically on auto-renewals with rate changes, the first month s premium payment is acceptance of the new terms
