I went to the Chester County SPCA on a Thursday night looking to give a dog a forever home. I saw a golden retriever Roxy that I immediately was drawn to. I asked multiple staff members what was going on with Roxy and I stated that I was interested in adopting her. At the time I was told that she was not ready for adoption because she still needed to get fixed. I understood that, and asked when she would be available for adoption, and was told that she would be available within the next couple days, and just to keep checking the website (which by the way she was never even posted on the website). I went back the next day, Friday, and saw that she was fixed, sat next to her for an hour to try to brighten her mood. I eventually asked if I could put a deposit down, and expressed how much I wanted to adopt her. I was told, in a very condescending manner, that they would not hold dogs overnight, which is very strange because the Delaware County SPCA has no problem holding dogs overnight. I knew that since she was a golden retriever she would be adopted very quickly, and wanted to make sure that she would be my dog. I went back Saturday morning right when they opened to see another family adopting the dog that I had visited and grown emotionally attached to. I would have adopted her the previous day, but since I was told I was not able to put her on hold. I am appalled that a non-profit organization that promotes that they want all of their dogs to go to great homes would allow something like this to happen. The family that adopted Roxy had every intention of adopting a dog regardless, and as a result one less dog was adopted today because of how this facility treats potential adoptive parents... EDITS a few years later: after "Roxy," now named Milly was adopted by another family in front of me, I was heart broken. However, after checking the website again about a week after the initial adoption by the other family I saw Roxy was available to be adopted. I called to inquire about this, and sure enough that was the same girl I wanted. I went back as soon as I could to get her. The family that adopted her took her back the NEXT day after Roxy growled at their kids, which I understand, however maybe we should get to know the dog more beforehand to prevent this rehoming. In the end, the rescue did send me a message via Facebook (which I unfortunately did not see) letting me know that Roxy was available again. I have increased my rating because they did try to contact me in regards to Roxy being back, however, if they would have let me put that deposit down originally, my sweet Milly would not have had to go through the stress of being returned to a shelter AGAIN as now that I know her she would not do well being moved so many times and it has clearly affected her as she has separation anxiety. It's been almost 4 years since I adopted Milly, and she is the most precious and perfect dog ever (maybe I'm a bit biased, haha). After all of the hardship at the beginning, it has worked out for the best and Milly is in the loving home she always deserved. Here's milly now
