Ancient Greek city of the Peloponnese, in Argolis ...

Ancient Greek city of the Peloponnese, in Argolis (9 km N-E of Argos) above the Inachos valley and the meeting point of all the roads heading south from the Corinth area. The city is situated in a splendid natural position which favored it to become a dominant center. This place of great beauty, forming a natural acropolis of moderate height (278 m), sheltered between the two mountains Haghios Elias and Zara, protected by the large ravine of the Chaos to the S, gave the ancient city dignity and solidity. Magnificent in its ruins, M. continues to fascinate and stimulate the imagination of even the most casual visitor and to maintain his undisputed position in the field of history, culture, epic, drama (see also Minoan, Mycenaean, art) .
