My partner and I moved here from NYC with the expectations that Walker House would either meet or exceed our expectations (given all of the hype surrounding Newark s renaissance )- but I painfully admit, we were wrong.
The pros are obvious- Nicely Restored , Conveniently Located but that s where it ends. The term The Fish Stinks from the Head aptly describes how poorly Jamie Confessore runs this building. If you want the truth, just keep reading*:
*NOTE: This review was written with the intent to inform prospective tenants and hold senior leadership accountable.
Cleanliness: Many residents in this building have pets, but because there s limited cleaning staff- a lot of pet hair tracks into our unit. It s so bad that pet hair always gets on our bed sheets, floors and sofa daily. I can t even remember the last time I heard or saw anyone vacuuming or cleaning the hallway floors- I don t even think there is a set schedule to be honest. Pandemic or not- it s pretty gross, even though I love animals I am not trying to sleep with 8 different breeds of dog every night (see photos). Overall Luxury Buildings are pretty much known for obsessing over the details, and this place misses mark-From the elevators to the floors- and everywhere in between (see additional photos).
Plumbing: The water issues are true, plus more. I ve even had water stop running on me multiple times while taking a shower. Also- when the weather gets warmer the lobby smells like sewage, it s definitely not luxuriating whatsoever. Then there s the annoyance of random pipes banging at the worst times.
Communications: They notoriously fail in this department on a routine basis. Ex: We had an issue that required an outside technician to come and assess our place, but we were never notified as to when to expect them. Days later Concierge randomly calls me telling me the Technician is ready to come into our unit. This type of thing has happened multiple times btw.
Staffing: The Concierge/Door Person/Security situation is much like a traveling caravan or circus. It s literally been a revolving door of good natured and hard working people who wind up quitting or asking for transfers because they get fed up with the toxic leadership and how they are treated on the job (7 people have come and gone so far). It took months into the pandemic for them to even get PPE basics and many of them get so frustrated with how they are spoken to by management. Also word on the street is that preferential treatment toward white residents is prioritized as it relates resolving maintenance issues and requests, so there s always that, which I don t think staff members would lie about. All of them are not white.
We are thankful for living here. However we believe that this building and the people who live in it deserve much better, no matter who they are.
