With my recent claim experience with QBE insurance, I will never purchase any travel insurance with them ever again.

I went on a holiday to Cape Town recently, and I purchased travel insurance as usual to ensure I had some protection in case there were accidents or involuntary changes resulting in financial loss. Unfortunately, such episode did happen in that my flight with Cathay Pacific from HK to Johannesburg was delayed by 9 hours, and as a result I had to rebook and purchase a new connecting flight from Johannesberg to Cape Town, as the delay meant that I would miss the original connecting flight. I submitted the claim on the additional costs (HK$1500) incurred to QBE, however, was given the response today that they would only process a claim of HK$250 cash benefit to me, which is even less than the amount I spent on the premium to purchase the insurance. Their rationale is that because there is no re-routing involved as per the wording of the policy, this condition whereby then my claim could be eligible won't apply in my case. What I don't understand is how they expect this to be re-routed, to go from Johannesburg to Cape Town, that only a direct flight makes the most sense. As confirmed by the agent, a Ms Szeto from QBE, had I purchase a flight from say Jo'bug to Port Elizabeth to Cape Town, then this would have satisfied the claim and I would have been eligible for reimbursement. This way of policy wording interpretation is utterly senseless and unrealistic in my opinion, and I now realise how QBE as an insurance provider functions and treats its customer. The level of protection is close to zero in scenario like mine, which is a very frequent and common scenario where claims might occur. Therefore, my conclusion is that I will never purchase any travel insurance with QBE again as it is not their objective to protect their customers in scenarios where claims can occur in higher frequency.
