I had a leak in my toilet. I suspected it was the wax ring. When I called Gold
Medal the service man arrived and confirmed it was the wax ring. He quoted
me a price of $ 721. to change it. His claim was that this was a high end toilet
(not true it was an American Standard Cadet), and that because it was a one
piece toilet it was extremely heavy (no true it is a two piece toilet). I told him it
was too much, but we then negotiated the price down to $ 500. (which was absurd
but I needed it done and I did not want to do it myself). After an hour he came
down and told me that one of the nuts was so rotted that he could not get it off
and that if he pulled the toilet it would probably break. He also told me that if
I agreed I would have to agree to purchase a new toilet from them at $ 1,200.
At that point I told him I would think about it and he could call me in two days.
When he left I took a Dremel tool, cut through the nut and after removing the
tank I was able to easily lift the bowl (PS: I am 70 years old), remove the
wax ring, scrape way the residual wax, replace the ring, replace the bowl,
and reattach the tank. The whole thing (not including my trip to Home Depot
to get a $ 3.99 wax ring) took my one hour. I am not sure about how good
their technicians are, I am just not sure about their ethics.
