After living locally for more than 10 years, my wife and I finally went to the River Cafe recently. We had a very nice evening, the food was excellent, and the staff nice and attentive.

Two things stop me from giving five stars. Firstly, the tables are very close together and the acoustics such that you can't help but hear all the conversations around you and if someone is standing by the table next to you to chat then that basically means they're sitting on your plate. Secondly, it did feel a bit rushed, with the main course arriving very swiftly after the starter - havin said this the staff had no problem when we asked them to leave a gap before dessert.

Overall it was a good experience and I'm sure we'll go back, but I wouldn't choose it for a romantic evening.
