Glen Dupras Review of Five Palms Restaurant

We made reservations at 5 Palms January 23, 2020 and when we arrived we were super pumped for a fantastic meal as the setting was gorgeous over looking the ocean. I would like to mention that we have been in Maui for 2/12 weeks and have been blown away with the quality of food and started a joke that we were on a mission to find horrible food as we did not think it was possible especially in a high end restaurant with high end prices. Well, we found it. 5 Palms was a complete disappointment from the $15 cocktails, that I swear had no alcohol, to the $17 Kahula salad that was a handful of mixed greens thrown on a plate with halved cherry tomatoes arranged around the edge of the plate and a quarter avacado sliced in the middle. There was supposed to be passion fruit dressing but there was no sign of dressing, we had to request dressing on the side. We ordered the carpaccio, which we assumed was beef, but it was fish. We thought ok, if this was a good grade sushimi we were ok with it but it was not meant to be. The not so uniform sliced fish was sitting in a pool of soy sauce and sprinkled with chopped macadamia nuts and sliced jalepenos - very under whelming. Our main was the hoisin ribs and gnocchi. The ribs were almost completely all fat and the hoisin sauce tasted like it was straight out of the bottle. So salty and inedible. The gnocchi was the biggest disappointment and I m not even going to describe the glutinous gobs of what they told us was sweet potato gnocchi. The waiter was gracious and very professional and we felt bad for him because the caliber of the food was not his fault. We have been to an array of restaurants over the past 2 1/2 weeks that blow 5 Palms away. This place has so much potential to be a gold mine because of its location, I hope they can pull it together sooner than later.
