When we arrived, the place looked nice, but behind this facade is a horrible lack of enthusiasm.

Upon our arrival, we were told that our room wasn't ready yet, which was okay as we were early. We chose to wait in the hotel bar and have a quick snack, but while the menu sounds appealing, their Toasted Special (6.50 ) was a plain ham and cheese toastie with a few crisps. An hour later, at the actual check-in time, we were told the room still wasn't ready. We had to wait another hour before finally being able to get our keys.

Despite this wait, the place had not been properly cleaned. Used cups, a dirty tea prep-station and already stained towels painted a grim picture and replacing the cups took two calls to reception.

It should also be noted that there is only a 1 in 8 chance to get a sea-view room, unless one pays for the specific suites. The majority of rooms face the hotel's 'courtyard', a concrete tub with an AC system that runs through most of the night creating a loud noise even with the windows closed.

The next day's breakfast was another disappointment. Despite having to book a specific breakfast slot, we had to queue with people who mentioned to us that they hadn't booked one, invalidating the whole process.
The staff was focused on getting guests seated, rather than taking orders and seemed overwhelmed with no clear system of responsibility in place. The food served was quite bad and half of our order was wrong. Nothing was fresh, not even my 'special order' pancakes, and my fried egg had a huge chunk of shell in it.

All in all we do not recommend staying here and feel that the 4 stars, the Salthill Hotel tauts for itself, are undeserved.
