I went to Seton Hays er in July 2020 for an afib episode. When I arrived to the ER, I informed the nurse and the ed doctor that I know how to treat this because I have have this situation in the past. I told them that I need 20mg if iv cardizem and to be bolused with at least 2 liters of NS stat. The ER doctor said that he only wanted to give me 10mg of cardizem and not even a liter of fluid. I explained to him that I am a RN that works for one of the other seton hospitals and I know what I am talking about. They disregarded what I said and only gave me 10mg. And of course it didn't work. We waited a few more hours and then the Doc decided to give me 10 more of cardizem, then nothing, and then 10 more, and then nothing. I told them that I needed more IV fluid but they ignored me. Then I told the nurse that I was worried about the expenses that were adding and he said "don't worry, we take care of our own, we will sweep it under the rug". Then the er doctor decided to give me an iv amio drip and that I would have to be admitted which I really did not want. I ask if I could stay in the ed but they pushed me to go to the floor, so I had to go along with it. When I got to the floor, I flipped into normal sinuse rhythm. I then talked to the hospitalist and she questioned the decision to not give more fluids down in the ED. My labs showed that at the time, my kidney function was poor from dehydration and that the fluid would of helped get me out of afib faster. I told her that I tried to tell them that but they wouldn't listen. So now, a couple of months later, the combined bill for all that they did is around a whopping $14,000 for a little bit of BP medicine, NS, IVsupplies, some labs, and a couple of ecgs- which all cost less the hospital that $100. My responsibility for all of it is around $4500 after my insurance part. In the past when my afib has happened, I went to the hospital location that I worked at, they listened to me and really took care of their own and I ended up paying a lot less. I will never go back to seton hays for this reason.
