I was in Sumter recently on a brief visit when I landed up in the emergency room of Tuomey hospital. It was a Sunday morning around 5am when I woke to extreme pains in my stomach. I knew what it was, I was having a small bowel obstruction. I hadn't had one in over four years, but those pains I endured never left my mind. I asked my lady where the closest hospital was. She said in Sumter, there was only one hospital and that wad Tuomey. Since I was from out of town, I went online to check the reviews of the hospital. It was very disheartening to see such poor reviews of this hospital. By this time it's now 6am and my pains are intolerable. My lady asked if I wanted for her to drive an hour to Columbia to get to a better hospital. I didn't have any options, I was in horrendous pain, I said take me to Tuomey. When I first walked in the ER, I was very skeptical....ok, the truth.....I was wondering, "Dear lord what am I doing here??" Well.....the almighty heard my prayer and sent me the staff of Tuomey hospital Everyone was courteous and that was not a Southern hospitality thing....it was we are here to help you get well thing. The staff of the 3rd floor, those ladies were on point and provided great service because they actually cared about their patients. Because of my line of work I notice operations and protocols of the places I work and frequent. This hospital was maintained, well staffed and operated in an efficient manner. I didn't plan on checking into the hospital when I landed there 2 weeks ago, but I am glad that I was treated and taken care of so tremendously well when I had to. People of Sumter, you have a great hospital.
