I've visited here on my own and took my 7 year old in the summer holidays. The Family Trail really helped with our visit and made sure we spent time looking more closely for answers and quirks of the vessel. You can easily spend a couple of hours when visiting and the cafe underneath is worth considering although the Cutty Sark blend tea is quite dreadful and the cakes are overpriced. But I like the chairs so like to pop by.
