I went to the ER because I could not bend my finger after cutting it with a kitchen knife. Dr. Stephanie Davis took a cursory glance at it and decided it was not deep enough to be the tendon. I asked if she was going to do any type of exam and she said it was not necessary, that it would get better over time. Okay, whatever. I don t have a medical degree, so I m not in a position to know about requisite tests for various injuries. After several days, I was still unable to bend it, so I followed up with my primary who referred me to a specialist who said it WAS the tendon and that it was basically too late to do anything. And the patient advocate pretty much said I was screwed because discharge paperwork said to follow up in 48 hours, although I was explicitly told by Davis to disregard those instructions and follow up in a week if I still couldn t move my finger. I mean, I get that it s just a finger, right? A pinkie finger, at that. Not the end of the world, obviously. But it still sucks that I ll never have a complete grip in my dominant hand again just because the doctor didn t take the time to provide proper treatment.
