The Mauritshuis is a beautifully intimate museum in an old stately house, right next to the political heart of the Netherlands (the Binnenhof). It holds a unique collection of Dutch paintings, from the most famous (Girl with a Pearl Earring by Vermeer and many Rembrandt's) but also lesser known paintings that tell the story of the development of the art of painting in the Netherlands, culminating in these greats of the Dutch Golden Age.

Due to the small rooms, the museum feels homely and compact, but is never crowded. It allows you to get up close and personal with great Master paintings in quiet comfort especially when compared to the Gallery of Honour of the Rijksmuseum.

In short, a visit to the Mauritshuis is The Hague is a must see for art lovers if you want to see intimate portraits by Rubens, Saenredams detailed Church interiors, Rembrandt's Anatomical Lesson or Vermeer's Girl!
