We'll if you're gonna charge $100 for 30 min consultation over the phone, at least sound knowledgeable! Doesn't really help when the client is telling you how complicated the situation can be and how the law is gonna play out. They need your expert opinion, not spend half hour on explaining how current rules work. Or if you feel like you're not being helpful return the money you took at the first place because you aren't the guy who's an expert and your your opinion doesn't help, at least not in the case of discussion. I had free consultations (even browsing on Quora) quickly gave me better advice where they were able to grasp and think ahead of the situation and discuss about all the possible outcomes.
If you feel like you can't help someone, just say it and save someone time and money which you take before even introducing yourself!
