Not amazing. Still a really good tour that should not be missed. Here's why...
The good:
- Their whiskey competes with anyone.
- Prices are decent.
- Tour guide was incredibly knowledgeable and friendly. Flat out, he was on point.
- I learned more about Irish history and how foreign factors impacted the irish whiskey industry.
- Tour goes into detail about the distillation process.
- The bar at the end of the tour (should you choose to linger) makes excellent cocktails. Try their Irish Coffee. One of the best I've had.
The bad:
The tour does not talk much (or at all) about:
- How the barrels are made. I know they use a lot of barrels from other spirits. Unsure if they actually make their own.
- How the charcoal is made (the lobby is made from wood piles that are stacked in such a way for charcoal to be made). I'm guessing they don't have to filter since they triple distill. Something I should have asked.
- They age the barrels off site in the country side to ensure a potential fire does not burn down Dublin. The black growth you'd typically see at a whiskey distillery from the evaporation process adds a ton of charm that you will not see here.
I know the title may be misleading compared to the pros and cons. The bad, I feel, is half of the whiskey making process. Overall, it's still a great time and I'd spend the 30 (comes with 4 whiskey tastings) to do it again if I had the choice.
