The Royal Swaziland Sugar Corporation sugar plantations are irrigated from the Lomati River. Back in the 1950's the British Colonial Development Corporation built a weir across the river with an extensive canal system. The old method of cutting the cane, involved a controlled fire which burnt out all the snakes and rodents living in the fields. Immediately after the fire the cane was cut and transported to the mill for processing. The Corporation have made a noteworthy contribution to the Swazi economy whilst providing a rewarding living for their well trained workforce
