I was extremely disappointed in the California Academy of Sciences. I would not recommend it to my friends or family traveling to this area.
Not only was it the most expensive destination on my trip along the California coast line; it was also the largest waste of my time. I found the parking a major hassle at Golden Gate park - get there early! - if I make it to San Francisco again I fully intend to leave my vehicle at home!
One adult admission here is $24.95. I would hope that with an admission price that high and the large amount of people this destination attracts that they could have possibly built more educational and in-depth exhibits. I found myself continually amazed at how small the size of the tanks seemed to be in relation to their contents and also the lack of information available for the exhibits and species within. I also was disappointed in the size of the line-ups for the rain forest and video presentations. This place seems to be quite unorganized and the staff was also not informative especially in comparison to those at other places I traveled to such as the Conservatory of Flowers and Monterey Bay Aquarium.
Regardless, I left feeling that I had wasted my time and money which could have been put to a greater use elsewhere in the park.
If you feel you must go here I highly recommend bringing your AAA card for a discount, going early in the morning and certainly to avoid the weekends.
RECOMMENDATION: I think that the Monterey Bay Aquarium is a much better value for your time and money. Why? The location is beautiful, the quality and quantity of the exhibits are fantastic, it's a great and fun place for kids and lastly I found it to be extremely educational and informative! While the admission is higher there are also some really good deals in the membership section that are worth it even if you and your party are only going once.
