Mycenae (Ancient Greek: , Modern Greek: ) is an Aegean civilization ruins on the plain of Argos, northeast of the Peloponnesian peninsula, Greece. It was the epic legend of Homer, the capital of the Achaeans, built by Perseus and ruled by Agamemnon during the Trojan War.

This city, once thought to be a fictional city, was re-excavated by German archeologist Heinrich Schlimann in the nineteenth century to regain its sight.

In fact, in the second millennium BC, it was indeed the most important city in Greek civilization. It ruled a large area in the south of the Aegean Sea. The civilization it represented was called the Mycenae civilization.

Prior to the classical Greek period, the city had been damaged by the (possibly) Dorian invasion. Its palace was abandoned in the 12th century BC. The Argosian army occupied the place in 468 BC and expelled its residents. Mycenae The city has since been destroyed.

In the classical period, the traveler Pausanias visited the site and records monuments such as the Lion Gate that still stand today.

UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1999.
