I'm a loyal hyatt Member and have stayed with quite a few Hyatt's throughout the country. I also travel to New York quite some, so I've had the good fortune of trying a variety of hotels in the midtown neighborhood. This property provides for a really subpar experience and in my opinion is completely un-deserving of the Hyatt brand name. I've stayed here a couple of times now, several months apart and both my experiences have been outstandingly disappointing. This is a pretty old hotel, and I'm sure this must have been a good hotel earlier in the century. but today it makes for a popular convention destination, and if your conference is not hosted in this hotel, you'd really rather not be here. The positives are it's great location and it's lobby. The rest of the experience is so shabby that it can't make up for those two positives. The rooms are really outdated sort of depressing with tiny windows, bathrooms small and outdated. This can be somewhat typical of non-brand name hotels in Manhattan, but sadly un-expected from a Hyatt hotel. The guest check-in or guest-request line is always long, and loyal hyatt member or not, it's typically a 20-30 minute wait. When you check-out they'll charge you to store your bags even for a couple of hours. I made the mistake of asking why they charge for bag storage and was rewarded with a half eye-roll and "that's what most hotels in the city do" (tch tch, what would I know, a lousy villager :-D). They do not have room service in the hotel, so if you realize you need a bottle of water at mid-night, you have to go down to the market (inside the hotel) in your pajamas because they won't bring it up to you. If you ask nicely twice, they'll be abrupt and their responses will make you feel weird that you'd even think of insisting, when that's just how it is. The elevator wait to get to your floor is always long, and you barely ever fit in with the first lot of guests. Every conversation with the representatives is impersonal or abrupt, my partner insists that it's not just impersonal it's 'rude'. Note that this is a very popular convention hotel, and they're likely just too overwhelmed to be concerned with guest needs beyond check-in and check-out and until the ceilings crumble, there's no reason to cut out of profits. In short, If you don't mind feeling unwanted or trivialized, and if the location + a market cafe in the hotel matter to you, you should try the place out. For me, there's a lot of other hotels that fit this criteria, so I'd rather go to one where I'm wanted :-)
