I went to the Superstructures exhibition, which I think had a bit of an identity crisis. Was it an exhibition of engineering, and how these challenges were faced by their designers? If so, it could have done with more technical information. Was it an exhibition of art, and how engineering had inspired a style of architecture that then took it beyond the pure engineering challenges? If so, I think the examples chosen were pretty poor examples, and did not create a consistent narrative. There was also no critical analysis of the success of the movement - why, for example, do many of the proposals that were suggested remain unbuilt? What was the failure? Or if not a failure, what value did the movement add to modern architectural design? These are the questions that I would like to have been tackled during the course of this exhibition, but were not.
