My three kids were born in three sequencial years and so I accompanied them on field trips to this zoo three years in a row back in the 90s. Coming from Ann Arbor I couldn't understand why we didn't go to the beautiful Detroit Zoo, one of the first in the nation to get their animals out of cages and into large open spaces. But I quickly learned that cages and much smaller outdoor spaces make for a more compact zoo and more easily navigated by adults herding elementary school children. Over the years the Toledo Zoo has done a lot to fix itself. I can remember when we started having lunch behind the bars in a former lion cage and since the last time we were there the beloved farm animals were relocated so their old enclosure is now part of a greatly improved elephant indoor/outdoor spaces that now cover five acres. The highlight of our visit, which included my kids and their kids, was the toddler sized elephant showing toddler sized enthusiasm wearing and shedding a tractor sized tire! Covid19 related: it seemed busier than the the 50% occupancy we been told to expect, but all of the other mitigations were in place. We saw 100% mask wearing the whole time. Indoor exhibits were closed, and social distancing enforced.
