My 20 year old daughter applied to the Proper in Raleigh, North Carolina. This was her first time moving out on her own. She signed the lease and less than 24 hours later she called and canceled the lease. Apparently there was a clause In the lease that discussed bedbugs. Being that this is a furnished room, she was disgusted by the idea of that possibility and the fact that it was in the lease really turned her off to wanting to live there. The gentleman on the phone told her ok I ll cancel that for you. Two days later she got a call from Jen who is a leasing agent telling her that she has to pay a $500 re-let fee. Keep in mind that my daughter had not paid a deposit, has never stepped foot on the property, has not provided a copy of any paystubs and not even a copy of her State ID. My daughter paid the fee because she felt forced/threatened by Jen. You see I had co-signed on the lease and Jen indicated that my credit for be ruined so that s why my daughter paid the fee. After sending emails and leaving several messages with the Cardinal Management Group. I finally received and email from their supervisor Emerald who basically said that my daughter was charged the wrong fee and that they will refund my daughter $150 of the $500 she paid. No where on the lease did it show the fee that would be so in a re-let situation nor could they produce for me where it said it on the lease. Lesson learned for my daughter to make sure and read before signing and to never lease from any property that is managed under Cardinal Management. If I could I wouldn t give them not one star for they lack of professionalism, empathy, poor training of their employees, unresponsive and rudeness.
