C DReview ofRHCH

This part of the review is based on my experience with the Emergency Department only. I had three different nurses and one doctor help me. All were efficient, nice and treated me with respect. They communicated well with one another, saw patients quickly, got blood tests and X-rays done in a few hours, kept checking my stats and generally were attentive.
I could hear the staff with other patients and they were just as great with them. Really appreciate the help and care I received. I didn t go to the hospital when I should have (when my Covid symptoms were at their peek) because I was worried my experience would be as bad as my spouse s in London last year (when he went to A&E for a life threatening condition) but it was the complete opposite. No comparison at all. The Royal Hampshire County Hospital in Winchester was amazing. There was someone cleaning regularly as well and they had hand washing stations & hand same available.
The young Resident wasn t that knowledgeable which is expected on some level at that stage of learning but some basic knowledge seemed to be missing. Or as I like to say a knack for the obvious was missing. She overlooked some important stats that were abnormal which resulted in me having to see a private cardiologist afterwards because my condition wasn t taken as seriously as it should have been and it turned out I had heart damage from Covid19. The A&E didn t perform am echocardiogram which is a must for heart issues. I was there for three hours and felt it wasn t as thorough as it should have been but that s the NHS. Underfunded.
For something serious like Covid19 organ damage my advice is to ask the paramedics to go to Southampton where they have more knowledge and experience and are using treatments that prevent things from getting worse. Winchester is a smaller less capable hospital so for heart issues and strokes patients should be sent elsewhere. Couldn t imagine the hospital in Winchester handling something like a major car accident with one Resident and one attending.

The Pathology Department is a different story. They are always disorganized, complaining and fighting with one another or yelling at patients. Always get a bruise from the pathologists here, never at the GP surgery and not at A&E. They ve also screwed up my bloods with another patients and I got their results but knew better because it was so off compared to months before and a private test weeks before. Very incompetent department that needs better management. They should take a lesson from A&E.
