In AMU1 ward with partners elderley 78yr mother to...

In AMU1 ward with partners elderley 78yr mother today overnight. As we were worried about her frailty and communication skills, we opted to sit by her bedside overnight. Glad we did because despite the ward being quiet as most patients asleep:

-For 5 hours to nearly 4am, a nearby patients heart monitor alarm sounded and was ignored. Another patient cried in distress at the noise. At 3.30am I couldn't stand it anymore and asked the nurse to close the alarm, she said it was something she "couldn't close" then promptly did.

-His mother was vomiting all day and couldn't keep any food or water in. We were awaiting anti-sickness meds and saline, which only appeared at 1am after prompting the nurse.

-Whenever she was vomiting, eg at 2.20am nurse totally ignored this. We took care of it, cleaned her up and put the waste in the bin.

-Asked same nurse for toilet, took an age to bring the komode, likely as Yoga which is more interesting was on her computer screen. After an age, she left it with us and left saying she was busy with another patient. We let his mother finish off, clean up and put her back into bed. We then simply pushed the komode out of our cubicle area. Had we not been there, if she even got the komode, she would prob have been left sitting there or fallen trying to redress herself and return to her bed.

Im sure we were unlucky to have this nurse, however this is poor. Please raise your standards by managing your staff. Patients who are vulnerable deserve better than this.
