I rescue outdoor cats and had an after hours emergency. The office was quick to get the cat into an exam room but after they took her back things took a really long time. The cat appeared to be very pregnant and in distress, so I was concerned that the babies may be stuck or there could be a problem.....so I was concerned about the amount of time it was taking to fully examine the issue. About an hour in I asked for an update, and explained that I needed to know if she needed surgery. The front desk informed me that they didn't have a surgeon on staff! the emergency hospital wasn't able to do a surgery if I needed, but still encouraged me to come there when I called and explained that I had a cat that may need an emergency c- section. The doctor was very nice, and the cat wound up having cancer and had to be pts.....but had she been pregnant I would have had to go to a second emergency vet and pay a separate fee since they don't always staff a surgeon. Please ask if they have one staffed before you take an animal in for urgent care.
