With one or two exceptions, our stay was fairly negative. My sister has an intellectual disability and I am her support person/advocate. She was admitted to the ER without me with the charge nurse unilaterally making a decision that was in violation of the hospital s current visitor policies during COVID. She also did not tell me how to appeal this decision or who to speak with. My sister did not fully understand what was happening (she was in a lot of pain, unable to eat without vomiting, and exhausted) and had to stay alone in the ER. I talked with the administrator the following morning and was able to stay with her overnight and mornings. The nurses rarely had read her file, so I had to repeat information, such as her current diagnoses. One nurse actually stated: I m just the nurse, so you will need to give a lot more context and information when she said she was still having pain in the same spot as the past 3 days. They never used the pain chart (which is often used with patients with an intellectual disability). It took anywhere from 10 minutes to 1 hour to switch her IV bag with the incessant alarm beeping. They dismissed her fears and questions. When her IV began to bleed, she said this meant it would break like the previous one and no one listened. It broke that night at midnight. After her surgery, they tried to draw blood in the middle of the night until I told them there was a Do Not Disturb note in her chart (they hadn t looked) from the doctor stating no blood draws until 8am. Overall, I would say avoid this hospital if possible. The doctors were great, communicative and talked with her, but the nurses were hit or miss (mostly miss) and sadly ableist.
