The Parliament House (Canberra), also known as the Canberra Parliament Building, the Australian Federal Parliament Building, is the residence of the Australian Parliament and is located in Canberra, the Australian capital. The building was designed by Michel/Gurgra Architects and was opened on May 9, 1988 by Queen Elizabeth II. At the time of construction, it was the most expensive man-made structure in the Southern Hemisphere, costing a total of about A$1.1 billion. Since Australia is a democratic state with a federal system and a cabinet system, this building is also at the heart of Australia's executive and legislative powers.
