The Fairmont Hotel in San Francisco sits atop Nob Hill, affording breathtaking views of the city and bay while offering easy access to the Financial District, Union Square and Fisherman's Wharf. The Fairmont San Francisco is also located at the only spot in the city where each of the cable car lines meet. This lovely Grande dame provides everything from an incredible night s sleep to a staff that stops at nothing to exceed expectations. Truly a slice of heaven the Beaux Arts-style property, designed by celebrated architect Julia Morgan (the genius behind the grandiose Hearst Castle), was about to open when its city suffered a devastating earthquake on April 18, 1906. The hotel didn't endure severe damage from the seismic activity, but fires that followed the quake soon claimed much of the property.
One year to the day after the disaster, the Fairmont Hotel San Francisco opened its doors to celebrate the rebirth of this great city. Revisiting this weekend I can tell you it is still majestic after all these years. And if you think you ve seen or done it all in San Francisco, have a cocktail in the legendary Tonga Room Tiki bar. What a kick!
