My mother was diagnosed with a blood clot in her lung and also had a pacemaker put in 2 days ago at Oro Valley hospital. She was discharged yesterday and because both my father and I suffer from health issues of our own, I contacted a case manager with their insurance company, Caremore (which has been ah-mazing and I highly recommend them). Andrea, our awesome Caremore case manager, and I agreed that it would be better if mom went to a rehabilitation center for a few days to make sure she received additional medical care before coming home. The hospital struggled to reach someone at Casas Adobe during the day to confirm everything was ready for my mom's arrival. Just before the transport vehicle arrived at 6, the nurse finally reached someone. I should have questioned the fact that she was being sent so late on a Saturday but I thought that there would be someone to "receive" us and get her all checked in and settled upon her arrival. NOPE! I arrived after she had been placed in her room because I had all of her stuff in my car. When I walked into her room I immediately understood why there are no pictures of the sleeping rooms on the website. It was tiny and bare. Mom had already asked for a cot or reclining chair for me so I could stay the night, but they put a mattress ON THE FLOOR! Uh gross! No one had helped her get into bed and comfortable. The only pillows she had were the 2 she arrived with and one was the pillow that goes under her knees. They put it under her head. Her night nurse came in to meet us, Yvonne, and she was so sweet and caring. It was only her 2nd day so she didn't know all of the policies of the place yet and was equally grossed out by the "bed" on the floor for me. It was about 8:30ish by then. She had to deliver meds to her patients first and then would be in to help us. I had been coming in the door labeled Acute Care to bring her stuff and no one at the nurses station there asked me who I was and 2 of the times the one nurse that was sitting there didn't even look up to see who was walking in. Talk about a lack of security!! Finally at 9:45 mom and I decided that there was no way we were staying. I went to the nurses station and said we were leaving. I had to take everything back to the car so after the first trip a different nurse came in to finally offer help. I questioned the bed on the floor and she said it was because the rooms are all private. Huh?? What does that mean? If mom got up in the night to go to the bathroom or if an emergency happened, I was in the way and anyone could trip right over me. I asked about the medications she has been getting at 8pm in the hospital and the nurse only had her 2 new meds. Poor Yvonne was trying to get done giving out meds to the 25 other patients she had on her list. It would have been after 10:30pm before she would have been able to get to us. She was so nice and helped me get Mom to the car. The service and staffing may be different Monday to Friday, 8am to 5pm, but they should never have allowed a new patient to be brought in late on a Saturday. I now know that I will never allow something like that to happen again. The hospital also should have made sure that C.A. was truly prepared. Tomorrow I will go visit in person the places we can send her. I'm going to try and attach the pics I took so you all can see what I've described. I hope this helps others facing the same type of thing.
