Back when this was built as the Experience Music Project, it was a pretty unique museum. I am a little sad that's gone, because it was something pretty different: an actually working museum of sound art instead of visual art. That said, the MoPop keeps the dream alive. While you can certainly see the infuence of Paul Allen's personal collection on the museum, which includes some great, but by now slightly dated pieces, the museum manages to keep it fresh with rotating exhibitions that actually work better in the MoPop than they would in an art museum, 'modern' or not because the MoPop is about culture first, and so can run with things that might not check the boxes for a more art or history focused museum. It's definitely a fun space, mostly kid and adult friendly, worth a visit, and maybe worth a membership. If you are visiting and only have time for one museum, this is the most unique part of the Seattle area museum collection available.
