Jason Cunnyngham Review of InterContinental Malta

It largely depends why you're coming to Malta, but I think it's safe to say you'd like to have a good view of the ocean. If you're staying at the intercontinental, it's assumed you'd want a upscale, modern room. Unfortunately, neither of these were the case for my stay. Unlike other reviewers, I enjoyed the neighborhood, although it does cater to the under 30 party crowd. The lounge here is amazing, and absolutely the saving grace of this hotel. Great drinks and good service. The breakfast served here is pretty decent, but the made to order menu is sparse for a 5*. If you're not getting enough exercise bouncing around Malta and Gozo, the gym here is outstanding.
I've been here a week, and have a week left. When you are up in the lounge, you can see the modern rooms right above you that feel like it would be more appropriate for the price. I guess I'm just bitter from looking at those nice rooms, it's quite possible they are not any better on the inside. I half expected to be upgrade upstairs, since I'm a platinum ambassador, but I should have listened to the other reviewers who said I'd get just a one level upgrade to the junior suite. It's a good sized room, but really needs redone (not just new furniture). Places like this make me question if it was wise for me to upgrade to Ambassador program, especially when I'll be at the Spire level after this stay. Finally, the top floor pool was great, with some nice views of the city. Again, don't expect to see more than a glimmer of the ocean. Unfortunately, today (22 Oct) was the last day the top floor pool will be open!
