In January of this year I a man of close to 90 years had a fall at home which ultimately
required me to be taken to the Victoria Hospital, Kirkcaldy.
After arriving, firstly to the A.&E. and then to Ward 31 within the new building I was
immediately impressed with my surroundings, I was in an individual private room, one of the new units in this hospital, equal, I am sure to a private home care unit.
Ward 31 deals with extreme fractures, and I was here because it appeared that I had a fracture
on my right hip bone.
My reception here was absolutely brilliant, my firsts concerns were quickly dispersed, I was surrounded by a bevy of beautiful nursing staff who very quickly took me into there care, it made me feel like a private guest, they were so attentive, efficient and disciplined and yet so friendly, I was introduced to them and they made me feel really good, true professionals.
(I still remember all of their names )
This is what our Health Service should be like for everyone.
My next stage was to meet the surgeons, who came and explained to me what had happened
to my hip, and told me about the procedures and the one they would use. Within two days my operation was over and 100 % successful and I became ready for re-habilitation.
However before that, I must mention that the first meal after my fast was exceptionally good
and that the the meals afterwards continued to be very good.
The therapy road maps were explained to me in full detail, the occupational preparing me to find the best way of doing things to make all things easier to get back to normal and the physios showing how to get my limbs going again, with the correct exercises. At all stages of my therapy I was kept fully informed about my progress.
Where my room was, near to the centre of operations, I was able to see and observe much of the movement within the ward and was impressed by the fact that everyone had a particular function and seemed to have a very disciplined approach to their tasks.
All the designated staff to my care were exceptional, and I shall always remember their names, but everyone in Ward 31 are a credit to the N.H.S. A real example of an excellent service, thank you all for assisting me to a full recovery.
Yours gratefully
David Gourlay
