We have been subscribers to the A1 monthly service...

We have been subscribers to the A1 monthly service program for 4 years now, although I am planning on cancelling that subscription based on the most recent interaction.
One of our AC units was not working well, the temperature was a few degrees higher than we had it set on the thermometer. I called A1 to come check it out. One nice thing about the monthly program is you get bumped to the front of the line. An A1 rep came out that night and checked the unit. He claimed we had a capacitor out among a couple other issues, and the the only answer was the unit needed to be replaced. He also claimed that because we have a unit that takes R22, and because R22 is being phased out, that it would become much more expensive to service the unit going forward. To replace the compressor and the fan motor it would be $3,678, or he could have a comfort adviser come out the next day to sell me an entirely new system.
With that second comment I knew he wasn't being totally truthful. You see, it is true that the plan is to phase out R22, but there is so much R22 in stockpiles and substitutes flooding in from China that the price of R22 has actually declined significantly over the past year. Look at the stock chart of HDSN, an R22 reclamation company, for an indication of what's going on with R22.
In any case, I paid the service fee and said I'll think about it. I called for a second opinion from another provider and that person came out the next day. He looked at the unit outside and in the attic and told me the units outside just needed to be cleaned as the intake filters were clogged with debris (grass etc), and the filters upstairs needed to be changed as they were old. He took care of the whole thing for $375 and now the system works great.
Long story short, A1 tried to sell a long-time customer a load of nonsense for a small problem that required very little work. It's absurd. I'm planning on cancelling my subscription service ASAP. Very disappointed as I had previously viewed the company positively.
