Madrid is maybe the worst big, capital city, international airport I have visited. Direction signage is poor, making navigating the huge airport frustrating. Queues are very long and poorly managed. I waited an hour to get my passport stamped to leave the country in Terminal 4S at mid day. Unacceptable. In the baggage claim area there are TVs everywhere showing soccer games and children's cartoons, but TVs showing where to collect your bags are few and far between. The architectural design of the airport is modern and impressive. Unfortunately, the designers didn't put so much effort into usability.
