The best time to visit the Acropolis is an hour before closing time. The sun is not so fierce and the sunset is fantastic. In the last 20 minutes or so people start to leave the site so there will be a better chance for photos. It is quite a hike up as well. I was lucky enough to witness cats that started to appear everywhere on the site.
