My cousin s wife has a massive hemorrhagic stroke at the age of 40 and is in critical care in the ICU on the 11th floor (Neurological floor) Neither her or her husband speak any English since they just migrated here from India a couple of years ago. The first day, they allowed us all to go to the 11th floor and stay in the visitors area (small waiting room on 11th floor) while my cousin was allowed as the solo designated visitor to her room- which is totally understandable since we are in the middle of a pandemic. But one of us - American born cousins- has to go with him to translate. Unfortunately- these are our circumstances. They would not allow us to to go up today or help translate anything to him. They kept telling us, he is being translated via a tablet he told us he doesn t understand fully what they are saying. They had a difficult time finding a Sikh person who speaks fluently in Punjabi - and it s so frustrating. We were told his wife is the most critical person on the floor hanging onto her life by a thread- and they would not allow us to help him in his most broken time. He s been crying excessively- mostly out of anxiety of not knowing what they are doing and what they are making him sign and all the procedures that are taking place. This isn t fair to further drag someone through unnecessary stress at a time where every hour is critical for the patient. We don t want to go bedside inside the ICU- we just want to translate from the 11th floor waiting room as we did the first day. Doctors and nurses were updating us and we were communicating with him fully and he understood everything. An iPad translation and a human translation are two different things. Poor guy hasn t slept in 3 days or anything and Methodist hospital is adding to his stress!
