Review of CrossFit Amrap

I started my CrossFit AMRAP journey 2 years ago. In March 2013, I was a 40+ out of shape smoker, who was lifting weights at the gym, but it was stale and not really working. I was 218lbs, I couldn t run a quarter mile, and had never done an Olympic lift in my life.

I made my New Year s resolution in 2013 to quit smoking and get back in shape. I had heard of CrossFit, but all I knew was those people are crazy and you have to be in really good shape to do that. So, being determined to achieve my resolution, I went to the Saturday Free class, how bad could it be? I was met at the door with a big smile by one of the coaches Everyone, including the members, is very friendly and welcoming. I went home after the first day and nearly vomited. Then slept for 2 hours, on the floor this was going to take commitment, this is what I needed.

Foundations is a (M,W,F) 2 week course where you learn all the basics: including safety, proper scaling of weight, proper form, and again, safety. My impression: These people aren t crazy this is a very controlled environment where you scale down the weight until your form and strength catch up with your ego. Yes, I wanted to show everyone I could Deadlift a Buick, but that really isn t a good idea.

I went 3 days a week for the first 5 months, scaling the workouts to what I could safely lift. By month 6, I had quit smoking, started to Rx the WODs, go 5-6 days per week, and lost 25lbs. Yes, I quit smoking and lost 25lbs due to CrossFit and personal determination.

One year into CrossFit, I competed in my first CrossFit Open and ranked 242 in the North Central Region 40-45 Year-old Men s division.

Come Be Awesome.
