I would certainly recommend doing this if you have kids. The drive to Dalegarth from Ambleside is picturesque but a bit tricky towards the end. The train journey was fun especially since we managed to get into the open cars (The partially covered ones are good but not as great as the open ones). Both our kids enjoyed the ride thoroughly. The view from the train is good but not remarkable. More so if you have covered other parts of the Lake District.
