When I moved into the home it had an extreme infestation problem. Not just cockroaches, but bed bugs as well. We went to them about it because the home had these problems before our occupancy and were told that it doesn't matter. The lease agreement says tenants are responsible for all pest issues even if the last tenants didn't take care of the home. They also do not maintain pest control between tenants. We spent hundreds of dollars ridding the house of bugs for the safety of our children because we could not afford to break the lease.
Fine, we stayed there 2 years. Why not? We had already dealt with the pest problem. Fast forward 2 years to when we moved out. I will grant them that I did not mow the lawn one last time. (my lawnmower broke a month before moving out and I accept the $90 penalty for that.) I will also grant them that the lease did insist upon professional carpet cleaning whereas I simply used my $500 machine and cleaned the carpets myself. They were cleaner when I left than when I moved in and there were no bugs. I also repaired the walls and painted over where my 5 y.o. marked on the walls with matching paint. They claim that they still had to repaint. I have no idea what blinds they replaced because we did not damage any blinds. But for paint, blinds, and door knobs, I was charged $450.
