King Saud University is an independent Saudi public university located in Riyadh. It was inaugurated on Rabi` al-Thani 14, 1377 AH / November 6, 1957, and is considered the second university established in the Kingdom after Umm Al-Qura University, and that was when King Abdulaziz ordered the establishment of the College of Sharia in Makkah in 1369 AH to become the first university educational institution to be established in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Its name was changed to the University of Riyadh during the reign of King Faisal bin Abdul Aziz, and it was renamed King Saud University during the reign of King Khalid bin Abdulaziz, who saw during his care of one of its closing ceremonies the return of its first name. King Saud University is the second largest university in the world in terms of area, and the government of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has allocated to this university the equivalent of 1% of the state budget annually.
