The Supreme Court of India came into existence on 28 January, 1950 when the first Chief Justice of India Shri H J Kania took the oath along with the other judges. Its first hearing was held in the Chamber of Princes inside the Parliament building. It was shifted to its present premises in 1958
It is the highest judicial institution of the Government of India. It now has a maximum of 34 judges and has wide-ranging appellate and advisory powers.
It is regarded as the most powerful public institution in the country.
