If you're visiting the Adirondacks then this is a MUST see. There aren't many publicly accessible Rustic Great Camps, let alone facilities like this one - National Historic Sites that offer "no velvet" ropes opportunities to take part in resident programs for up to a week. Tours offer a taste of life at camp - both "upstairs and downstairs" looks into how the Vanderbilt's lived and how their support staff toiled to keep Camp operating 24/7/365, in the ready for a visit. The best way to experience Sagamore and all it has to offer is to take part at a program hosted at this non-profit institution. Prospective guests should check out the website for a current list of programs - even volunteer opportunities. The setting of the Camp is simply marvelous and the architecture here inspired the design of many of the National Park's most iconic Lodges. Top notch staff, plenty of recreational and educational opportunities, and all the comforts that can be found in a well-appointed hotel with just the right amount of "Roughing It" Vanderbilt style. What else would you expect from the place that purportedly inspired Margaret Emerson to coin the word "Vacation" ?
