We had a terrible experience in the emergency room...

We had a terrible experience in the emergency room and will never use this emergency room again even though they are the closest to our house. My son had tried to commit suicide. We were treated like criminals. We arrived around 1 am and were taken back to a room pretty quickly. There were no chairs in the room so I stood for more than 4 hours. Finally I asked if I could get a chair. There was a security person outside of the room who was talking inappropriately and was making jokes with the desk staff. My son spent 2 days here until they could send him to another facility. We made it clear that he is vegetarian however he kept receiving meals with meat or chicken gravy. When we confronted the nurse she did not apologize but instead made excuses. When I finally left to go home for a little rest, I returned to find my son in a room with only a bed, again as if he was a criminal. We asked to have him moved to a regular room with a tv and they did move him back. The "DR" came in and said, in front of my son, "wow what a great mother's day for you" to me. Why would a DR say that in front of someone who is obviously in a bad place? He made my son feel even worse about himself. This was a bad situation made worse by this hospital. When my son was transported to another facility, for a 72 hour hold we were received by a compassionate and caring staff. I know that the emergency room doesn't always deal with depressed people who have tried to commit suicide but they do need to have training and be taught compassion. Depressed people are not criminals and should receive the care they need without being made to feel worse by a hospital's emergency room staff. This problem not only needs to be addressed by this local hospital buy also by our health care system in general who stigmatizes mental illness.
