Just got a call from them stating I owed them 312$...

Just got a call from them stating I owed them 312$ for not paying for the month of March. The club completely shut down on March 16th due to COVID-19 and no one has been in contact with me about my bill the month of March 2020. Apparently I ve been accruing late charges over the entirety of COVID when I literally couldn t even go into the club to cancel my membership. I was given an ultimatum over the phone from Ginger in the accounting department. I could either pay 99$ today or she would send a $300+ Bill to collections. I asked if I could call back later in the day and she gave me her number and now when I call the phone goes straight to voicemail. I feel like I ve been extorted. How is this good business practice?
