The history of Zaca Mesa Winery dates back to 1972 when it was founded by a group of friends who shared a passion for wine. The founders were inspired by the Rhône Valley in France and wanted to create wines that reflected the same style and character as those produced in this region. They chose a site on the Central Coast that had similar soil types and climate conditions to those found in the Rhône Valley.
Over time, Zaca Mesa became known for its high-quality wines, particularly its Syrah, which was one of the first varietals planted at the vineyard. Today, Zaca Mesa remains true to its roots as a family-owned and operated winery committed to producing exceptional Rhône-style wines.
The Vineyards at Zaca Mesa
Zaca Mesa has two estate vineyards: The original vineyard was planted in 1973 with Syrah being one of their first varietals planted; it's now home to some vines over 45 years old! And their newer Black Bear Block Vineyard which was planted with Grenache Noir & Blanc (white) along with Mourvèdre & Counoise - all classic Southern French varieties used for blending into Châteauneuf-du-Pape style blends.
Both vineyards are located on hillsides with well-draining soils that are ideal for growing grapes. The cool ocean breezes from nearby Pacific Ocean help moderate temperatures during hot summer months allowing grapes more time on vines before harvest resulting in more complex flavors.

At Zaca mesa they believe great wine starts with great fruit so they focus heavily on farming practices such as hand pruning & harvesting along with sustainable farming techniques like cover crops between rows which helps maintain healthy soil structure while reducing erosion runoff into nearby creeks or rivers.
