Year Up: Bridging the Gap between Talent and Opportunity
Year Up is a non-profit organization that aims to bridge the gap between talented young adults and top companies. The organization was founded in 2000 by Gerald Chertavian, who saw a need for an innovative approach to address the opportunity divide that exists in our society. Year Up has since grown into a national organization with locations across the United States.
The mission of Year Up is to provide young adults with the skills, experience, and support they need to reach their full potential. The program targets low-income young adults aged 18-24 who have a high school diploma or GED but face barriers to employment such as lack of access to education or job training.
Year Up offers a one-year intensive training program that combines hands-on skill development with professional coaching and support. The program includes six months of technical and professional skills training followed by a six-month internship at one of Year Up's partner companies.
During the first six months of the program, students attend classes five days per week where they learn technical skills such as coding, data analysis, cybersecurity, or project management. They also receive professional development training on topics such as communication skills, teamwork, time management, and problem-solving.
In addition to technical and professional skills training, Year Up provides students with wrap-around support services such as transportation assistance, childcare subsidies if needed; financial aid counseling; mental health counseling; academic tutoring; career coaching; resume building workshops; interview preparation sessions among others.
After completing their classroom-based learning phase successfully students are placed in internships at top companies like JPMorgan Chase & Co., Salesforce.com Inc., Bank of America Corp., Microsoft Corp., etc. During this phase students get hands-on experience working alongside professionals in their chosen field while earning stipends which help them cover living expenses during this period.
The internship phase gives students an opportunity not only to apply what they have learned but also gain valuable work experience which helps them build their resumes while networking with professionals from different industries. Many interns are offered full-time positions after completing their internships based on performance during this period.
