History

The Valero Texas Open has a long and storied history that dates back almost 100 years. The first edition of the tournament was played in 1922 at Brackenridge Park Golf Course in San Antonio. At that time, it was known as the Texas Open and was one of only three professional golf tournaments held in America.

Over time, the tournament grew in popularity and moved to different venues throughout San Antonio before settling at TPC San Antonio's Oaks Course in 2010. Today, it attracts thousands of spectators each year who come to watch some of their favorite players compete on one of America's most challenging courses.

Tournament Format

The Valero Texas Open follows a traditional stroke-play format where players compete over four rounds (72 holes) to determine who will be crowned champion. The field typically consists of 156 players who are selected based on various criteria such as their world ranking or performance on other tours.

After two rounds (36 holes), there is usually a cut made where only those players who have scored within a certain number of strokes from the lead are allowed to continue playing into Saturday's third round (54 holes). On Sunday afternoon after all four rounds have been completed, the player with the lowest score is declared the winner.

Course

The Valero Texas Open is played on TPC San Antonio's Oaks Course, which was designed by Greg Norman and opened in 2010. The course measures 7,435 yards from the championship tees and features a challenging layout that tests even the most skilled golfers.

The Oaks Course has been praised for its natural beauty and unique design elements such as its rolling hills, native grasses, and limestone rock formations. It also features several water hazards that come into play on several holes throughout the course.
