The Planetary Society: Exploring the Universe and Beyond
The Planetary Society is a nonprofit organization that has been at the forefront of promoting space exploration, education, and advocacy for over 40 years. Founded in 1980 by Carl Sagan, Bruce Murray, and Louis Friedman, The Planetary Society has grown to become the largest and most effective organization of its kind.
With a mission to inspire people around the world to explore other worlds and seek answers to some of humanity's biggest questions about our place in the universe, The Planetary Society has made significant contributions to space science research. Through its various programs and initiatives, it has helped advance our understanding of planets beyond Earth while also advocating for policies that support space exploration.
Education
One of The Planetary Society's primary goals is to educate people about space science. It offers a range of educational resources for students, teachers, and anyone interested in learning more about astronomy or planetary science. These resources include lesson plans, activities for kids, webinars with experts in the field as well as online courses on topics such as Mars exploration or astrobiology.
The society also sponsors student competitions such as "Explore Mars" which challenges students from around the world to design missions that could help humans explore Mars more effectively. For example one project called LightSail aims at developing solar sail technology which could be used by future spacecrafts traveling through deep-space without using any fuel! Another project called PlanetVac aims at developing new ways collecting samples from other planets without contaminating them!
